Whether they’re organising fundraising events, taking on personal challenges, or simply giving their time to support others, every act of kindness helps Hospiscare continue providing specialist care to patients and their loved ones across Exeter, central and east Devon.
We’re proud to celebrate some of our Hospiscare Heroes – the incredible people whose dedication, generosity, and creativity make a real difference in our community.

Topsham Friends of Hospiscare: bringing the community together
We’re incredibly fortunate to have so many amazing supporters who give their time and creativity to organise wonderful events for Hospiscare. To begin this edition, we’re celebrating one group that goes above and beyond throughout the year – the Topsham Friends of Hospiscare.
This passionate and dedicated group is always finding new ways to bring people together, have fun, and raise vital funds for their local hospice.
Their latest adventure was the Cream Tea on The Quay, a community fundraiser held on Saturday 8 August. With delicious treats, plenty of warm conversations, and a wonderful community atmosphere, the event raised an incredible £1,209 for Hospiscare.
A huge thank you goes to Jackie and Debbie at The Lighter Inn, Sophie at The Cafe Topsham, Helen and Peter at the Antique Centre, and Ian Clark of Clark & Co Estates for their generous support and contributions.
And a special shout-out to Nick Brady, who captured some fantastic drone photographs of the event, and to everyone who volunteered and gave a helping hand. Events like this simply wouldn’t be possible without you.
Together, you’ve helped raise vital funds to support local patients and families across our community. Thank you for helping Hospiscare continue to be there when it matters most.

Melvyn: going the extra mile – and turning purple!
Our next Hospiscare Hero, Melvyn, certainly didn’t hesitate to take an unconventional approach to supporting our charity!
Determined to raise funds and awareness for Hospiscare, Melvyn not only got himself a Mohican haircut – he also dyed his hair purple. And, in true Melvyn style, he even gave one of his sheep the same colourful treatment.
Behind the fun is a deeply personal reason for Melvyn’s fundraising.
Hospiscare cared for Melvyn’s dear friend Nicki, who sadly died in April this year on our Exeter ward. Nicki was a very special person, full of love and care for others. The compassionate care she received inspired a whole team of people to come together and support Hospiscare in her memory.
Melvyn’s fundraising has already raised incredible £2,314.56, and his campaign is continuing to make a difference.
His fundraising is also part of a wider family and community effort to honour Nicki’s memory. Her son, Simon, will soon take on the Swiss Peaks Marathon, while family friend Mark at Orway Porch Farm is supporting Hospiscare through their Maize Maze, raising funds in Nicki’s memory.
From purple hair and a purple sheep to running an ultramarathon and creating a maize maze, there are countless ways to become a Hospiscare Hero.
What connects them all is something much simpler: love, kindness, and a desire to make a difference when it matters most. From everyone at Hospiscare – thank you for making a difference.

Four-legged bonanza in support of Hospiscare
On 5 July, our next Hospiscare Heroes brought the community together – four-legged friends included – for the Tail-Spin & Canine Capers Memorial Fun Show.
Held in memory of a much-loved companion, Chel Seabrook brought together friends, family, and supporters for a wonderful day filled with wagging tails, laughter, fun and special memories.
We’d like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Chel and everyone who came along and supported the event. Together, they raised an incredible £650 for Hospiscare.
Every donation helps us continue providing compassionate specialist care and support to local people and their families during some of life’s most difficult times. Fundraisers like this are a beautiful reminder that, even in the midst of loss, treasured memories can inspire kindness and help make a difference to others.
From all of us at Hospiscare, thank you, Chel, for your dedication, hard work and incredible support. We’re so grateful to have you as part of our community.

Special birthday celebrations: keep dancing!
Sometimes, fundraising can be as simple as celebrating the people around you – and our wonderful Sequence Dancing Club in Exmouth knows exactly how to do it!
Inspired by the care some of their members and their loved ones have received from our Coastal team, the group has found some wonderfully joyful ways to support Hospiscare.
Whenever there’s a birthday among the group, Steven bakes a cake and asks members to make a donation to Hospiscare. Recently, the club celebrated Joyce’s 95th birthday, while another birthday celebration saw members enjoy cake and fizz together, with donations made to support our work.
It’s a lovely example of how friendship, celebration, and generosity can come together to make a difference. A huge thank you to Ellen, Steven, and everyone at the Sequence Dancing Club in Exmouth for helping Hospiscare to care for those in need.
Thank you to all our Hospiscare Heroes
From every act of kindness, big or small – whether it’s running an ultramarathon, organising a community event, baking a birthday cake, or buying a raffle ticket – our supporters help make compassionate end-of-life care possible.
To every one of our Hospiscare Heroes, thank you. Your generosity, creativity, and commitment are making an extraordinary difference to patients and families across our community, helping us to be there when it matters most.
We love hearing your fundraising stories! Please share your photos and updates with us on Facebook or Instagram. Feeling inspired? Visit our fundraising page to discover how you can get involved and do your own thing for Hospiscare.
