Each of our Heroes in unique, and it’s thanks, in part, to their incredible efforts that we can provide support to patients and their families across Exeter, Central and East Devon.

Join us in celebrating their unwavering dedication to making a difference.

Otter Garden Centre’s deep-rooted commitment to Hospiscare

Our team of incredible Hospiscare Heroes at the Otter Garden Centre in Ottery St Mary are a shining example of how a local family-run business can blossom – not only from the array of beautiful plants they cultivate, but by nurturing a deep-rooted commitment to their community too, over 60 incredible years in business.

Since opting to support Hospiscare as their charity partner back in 2019, Otter Garden Centre has shown unwavering generosity and kindness over the last six consecutive years, whilst bringing joy to countless local families through their special events. Their phenomenal efforts in 2024 alone raised an astounding £37,072.61—a true testament to their passion for making a difference.

But their impact goes beyond events and fundraising. They also play a vital role in other ways, from supporting our Open Gardens initiative to volunteering their time to our Christmas tree recycling collections.

Team Otter’s involvement has been invaluable, and we are incredibly proud of, and grateful for, our flourishing partnership. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for once again choosing Hospiscare as your charity partner. Your kindness and generosity make an immeasurable impact, and we couldn’t wish for a better group of Heroes to have at our side.

Julie & Lucy’s Ultra Challenge in memory of Andrew

A special thank you goes to Julie and Lucy, an amazing mother-and-daughter duo who bravely took on the Ultra Challenge London Winter Walk Half Marathon in memory of Andrew—Lucy’s dad and Julie’s beloved husband.

Their determination and heartfelt efforts raised an incredible £1,955 to support our patients and their families. But the generosity didn’t stop there – in a wonderful act of kindness, Lucy’s employer stepped in to match-fund £575 of their sponsorship—bringing their final total to an impressive £2,530!

This incredible contribution will make a real and lasting impact to those in our care. Julie and Lucy, your strength, generosity, and kindness mean the world to us—thank you!

Jim completes his epic UK coastline tour

Last year, we shared updates on Jim Bray’s incredible journey around the UK coastline. Now, we’re thrilled to be able to celebrate his remarkable achievement.

Jim set off from Tenby, Pembrokeshire, touring anti-clockwise around Britain and covering an astonishing 8,000 miles in just 58 days. Hugging the coastline as closely as possible, he averaged 135 miles per day, navigating the length and breadth of the British Isles – including as far north as the Orkney Islands.

Jim took on this challenge in memory of his sister, Emma Ansley, who was cared for by Hospiscare before she sadly passed away.

“Many times, I would turn a corner and just say to myself, ‘Wow’ or ‘That’s incredible,’” said Jim.

For those seeking adventure or travel inspiration, Jim documented his journey on his Facebook and Instagram pages, capturing the awe-inspiring landscapes he came across – and the occasional cosy pub. Jim also created a special page dedicated to Discovering Devon, Somerset and beyond.

Thanks to his fundraising efforts, Gift Aid and a match-funding donation from an anonymous supporter, Jim raised an incredible £5,000 for Hospiscare in Emma’s memory.

From all of us at Hospiscare – Jim, you are a true Hospiscare Hero. Thank you!

A special word of thanks to The Land Rover Experience

Generosity comes in many forms, and a valuable gift can be one of space, time, and reflection.

By kindly offering up their stunning venue to us, the Land Rover Experience provided an invaluable opportunity for our Senior Clinical Team to come together, reflect on the services we provide to our patients and their families, and plan for the future, in a truly peaceful setting.

This was the first time in a while that our team had the chance to gather together in this way, and the experience was deeply appreciated. The tranquil atmosphere and calming surroundings created the perfect space for meaningful discussions and renewed focus.

A heartfelt thank you goes to The Land Rover Experience for being so welcoming – you have made a real difference to our clinical team and, ultimately, to the patients and families we care for.

Thank you to all our Hospiscare Heroes on behalf of our staff and volunteers, patients, and their loved ones.

We love to hear your fundraising stories. Please keep sharing them with us on social media. Every effort, big or small, helps bring comfort and support to those in our care.
