Hospiscare Heroes: From Pedals to Peaks

Our Hospiscare Heroes are an endless source of inspiration

Week after week, they prove that nothing—not rain, wind, or unpredictable British weather—can stop them from pouring their time, energy, and creativity into fundraising for our local charity.

Here’s a glimpse into how they have been using their extraordinary talents.

Our first Hospiscare Hero Graham Simpson didn’t let a bit of bad weather stop him from achieving something truly remarkable. This year, Graham completed the Ride Across Britain, an epic nine-day cycling challenge spanning 980 miles from Land’s End to John O’Groats. He faced unpredictable weather, tough terrain, and countless miles, but Graham’s determination saw him through.

His incredible effort raised an astonishing £2,342 for Hospiscare.

Graham, thank you for being an inspiration to us all! If you’d like to contribute to Graham’s fundraiser, please visit his JustGiving page.

In October 2023, Dianne McKnight gathered her friends and family to tackle a challenge close to her heart. Together, they climbed England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike, in memory of Dianne’s mother, Heather, who passed away in September 2023, aged 95.

Heather was our patient, and Dianne shared that our care allowed her mother to pass away peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones. Dianne added “All I can do is remember her wonderful example, live my very best life and hopefully inspire others to do the same.” Dianne’s team did exactly that, they conquered the peak with a breeze and raised an incredible £2,834 for Hospiscare.

Dianne, thank you for turning your grief into something so positive. If you’d like to support Dianne’s efforts, please visit her JustGiving page.

Completing the Ultra Challenge is no small feat, but Denise and Teresa have taken on not one but several of these gruelling events. This year, they powered through the Thames Path Challenge, walking from Putney Bridge to Henley, and despite the aches and pains, they raised £415.

Meanwhile, their friend Guy took it to the next level by running the entire 100km continuously. Inspired by the care Hospiscare has provided to his friends and family over the years, Guy’s phenomenal effort raised £2,235.

Thank you all for your incredible determination and for helping us care for more local patients. If you would like to support Guy’s effort, please visit his GoFundMe page.

Hospiscare Hero Kerry decided to celebrate her 50th birthday by taking on the Southwest Coast Path, walking from Exmouth to Studland, near Poole. Kerry, a GP in the Exmouth area, chose this challenge to give back to Hospiscare, as appreciation of the support we provide to her patients.

“Hospiscare are a local charity who support my role as a GP immensely, offering support, symptom control and end-of-life care to my patients in and around Exmouth,” Kerry said.

Thank you, Kerry, for going the extra mile—literally! If you would like to support Kerry’s efforts, please visit her JustGiving page

Our last superheroes prove that even the English summer rain or a national football match can’t dampen the spirits of a wonderful community gathering. Back in July 2024, the Proms, held on the lawns at Downes House, were a fantastic night filled with live music, laughter, and community spirit. The Crediton Town Band, Crediton Boniface Rotary, and Tedburn Community Choir ensured that the night was one to remember, despite the weather.

Thanks to the combined efforts of all involved, including additional fundraising events during Garry Adams’ presidency, Fred Oliver was able to present a cheque for £2,500 to Hospiscare.

A huge thank you to everyone who played a part in making this event a success. You truly are our Hospiscare Heroes!

A Heartfelt Thanks
