“A little kindness goes a long way,” so the saying goes. Today, on World Kindness Day (Thursday 13 November), we’re celebrating just a few stories of our incredible Hospiscare Heroes – those in our community who truly act with kindness and compassion, in support of local people and their families facing terminal illness.
The specialist end-of-life care we provide to patients and their families across Exeter, central and east Devon simply wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of Hospiscare supporters out the community. Our monthly Hospiscare Heroes blog showcases some of the ways we receive that incredible support.
John’s poetry with purpose
Our first Hospiscare Hero, John, channels his love of words into acts of generosity. Through the sale of his fourth collection of poetry, A New Horizon, John has raised an impressive £250 in support of Hospiscare.
All profits from his book sales have been kindly donated to our charity, showing a wonderful example of creativity turned into care. Thank you, John, for putting your talents towards a good cause and helping us bring comfort to those who need it most.
Pamela puts the kettle on
Our Coffee Morning campaign, run through September each year, has always been a celebration of kindness, connection, and community spirit — and 2025 is no exception.
A special thank you to Pamela, who hosted a delightful coffee morning in her garden in Budleigh Salterton. She transformed her outdoor space into a haven of laughter and homemade treats, raising an amazing £475 in support of Hospiscare.
We’d also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Pamela’s friends and family, whose hard work and generosity made the event such a success.
Young Changemakers — inspiring the next generation
A year ago, we proudly launched our Young Changemakers programme with Exeter School – a unique opportunity to empower students to become young ambassadors for end-of-life care.
Since last October, eight students have taken part in a series of workshops with Hospiscare’s Learning and Development team, gaining valuable insights into end-of-life care, project management, and fundraising.
We’re so proud of how brilliantly they’ve put their learning into action. From organising a hockey tournament to leading a festive Reindeer Run, the students raised an incredible £4,102.34 for Hospiscare.
Beyond fundraising, they’ve also delivered informative talks and assemblies, to inspire younger students and help them understand the importance of compassion and care within our community.

Helping our care grow
Our final thank you goes to Darts Farm and The Topsham Friends of Hospiscare for their incredible support and kindness this summer.
Once again, Darts Farm generously opened up their land and worked hard to grow a stunning field of sunflowers — creating a beautiful space for families and friends of all ages to enjoy. The field became a place filled with smiles, laughter, and sunshine, where visitors could pick their own sunflowers, capture lovely photos, and share special moments together — all while supporting their local hospice.
Thanks to the generosity of everyone who took part, an amazing £11,500 was raised for Hospiscare.
This donation will make a real difference, helping us continue to provide compassionate care and support to patients and their families when they need it most.
