Hospiscare Heroes – From skydives to fundraising groups

Our Hospiscare Heroes have been flexing their super powers to support our charity in an incredible variety of ways

Our Hospiscare Heroes are truly super; week after week, they support our local charity with their fundraising endeavours across Exeter, Mid and East Devon and help to save our services for the future.

From all of us at Hospiscare, we are sending a huge thank you to all of our Hospiscare Heroes. Read on to find out how they have been flexing their super powers this week.

Two men jumping tandem from a plane

We would like to say a big thank you to Will Harrison who took to the skies for Hospiscare on Sunday 29 May. Will works for Devon Tiles, who are a member of Hospiscare’s 40 Club, and in total, Will raised a fantastic £564!

Four people holding a big cheque

From L to R: Cllr Dean Stewart, Hospiscare Area Fundraiser Toni Hiscocks, Cllr Stewart Lucas and Deputy Mayor, Cllr Vicky Johns

We would also like to thank Ottery St Mary Town Council for awarding the local Hospiscare fundraising group, Magpies, with a grant to purchase a gazebo to help with their ongoing fundraising efforts. Magpies are a group of ladies from Ottery who volunteer their time sorting and cleaning unwanted or broken jewellery. The Magpies upcycle the items to sell to raise funds for Hospiscare. To date, this amazing group of volunteers has raised around £22,000 for our local charity!

Two women wearing coats and hats outside at an event

We would like to say a huge thank you to our very own Donations and Lottery Administrator, Denise Hook, and her sister Teresa for taking on the epic Jurassic Coast Challenge to raise funds for Hospiscare. Denise and Teresa’s challenge took place in May with the route spanning 100km from Weymouth to Bridport. Despite an “emotional moment” on the hills, Denise and Teresa reached the finish line and raised an incredible £1,392 for Hospiscare.

A man with his arms raised after crossing a finish line

We would like to say a big thank you and good luck to Jason Netherton-Sinclair who is taking on an epic 100 mile running challenge – the South Downs Way – on 11 June. Jason will run in memory of his father-in-law, John, who died on 3 June after a short illness. John was cared for by Hospiscare and Jason says: “The care provided by Hospiscare was gratefully received by the whole family and made a difficult situation that little bit easier. As their funding is only via charitable donations, I have decided to run the South Downs Way on 11 June in memory of John and to raise vital funds for Hospiscare.”

A man holding a small tree

Thank you to the Exeter Friends of Hospiscare for holding their annual plant sale to raise money for our charity. The event was an incredible success with stalls selling plants, cakes, books and more. There were plenty of happy customers, including this lovely chap with his new palm tree! Thank you to the Exeter Friends and to everyone who supported the event.

Four people with a cheque

From L to R: Alan Wilson, Charity Steward for the Lodge of Perseverance in Sidmouth, the Worshipful Master Tony Whitehead, Hospiscare Fundraising Projects Manager, Laura Robertson and Hospiscare Area Fundraiser, Jake Cawthorne.

Thank you to the Devonshire Freemasons for their recent donation to our charity as part of their Wake Fund where local charities and organisations were given a share of £25,000. We were very grateful to be chosen to benefit from this donation alongside the other fantastic local causes recognised.

A man and a woman holding a big cheque with a Hospiscare nurse

We are so grateful to Graham and Diane for their incredible donation of £700 to our local charity. The couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in April and held a gathering for friends and family at Matford Lodge, asking for donations to Hospiscare in lieu of presents.

A woman with a bicycle on a sunny day

Thank you to Natalie, Accounts Manager at EDP Environmental, for cycling 40 miles every week throughout May to raise money towards EDP’s Hospiscare 40 Club Fundraising. Natalie is also preparing for a skydive in July – incredible!

Thank you also to the members of CrossFit Exe who are taking on a 2.5 hour workout in teams of three in aid of Hospiscare. The teams will aim to accumulate as many reps as possible of row cals, weighted box step ups, bike cals, burpees and ski erg calls. Finally, we would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has chosen Hospiscare for their Amazon Smile donations. From 1 January to 31 March 2022, your purchases through Amazon Smile have resulted in a donation of £184.77 to our local charity.
