Hospiscare’s Machu Picchu Trek Heroes!

In this special Hospiscare Heroes blog, we thank our incredible Machu Picchu trekkers of 2024

Embarking on the Machu Picchu Trek for Hospiscare was more than just a physical challenge; it was a once-in-a-lifetime journey filled with awe-inspiring landscapes, cultural immersion, and shared purpose. Over ten unforgettable days, the group explored Peru’s rich heritage, pushed their limits, and contributed to a cause that makes a difference in the lives of many.

Our incredible trek heroes raised a staggering £91,976.11 – a total almost as awe-inspiring as the landscapes and views of their trip. Here’s a glimpse into this incredible adventure:

Day 1: Touchdown in Peru

The group’s adventure began bright and early at Heathrow Airport. Excitement buzzed as everyone boarded their flight to Lima, where they enjoyed their first evening together over dinner—or for some, a much-needed early night!

Day 2: Welcome to Cusco

From Lima, a short flight brought the group to Cusco, a breath-taking city nestled at 3,399m above sea level. They met their expert guides, Ever and Rudy, before diving into Incan history and local culture. From the vibrant Plaza Mayor de Cusco to climbing to the viewpoint to indulge in panoramic mountain views, the day was full of exploration, music, and cultural learning.

Day 3: Sacred Valley and indigenous connections

After spending the night in a hotel, and feasting upon breakfast, the group set off in coaches to visit, stay with and learn about the indigenous community, Huilloc. Along the way, the group learnt about Inca mining, the importance of astronomy in Inca culture and even visited a llama farm before stopping for photos at the Sacred Valley viewpoint.

Day 4: Giving back to the Huilloc community

The group rolled up their sleeves for a meaningful day of volunteering. Dressed in traditional clothing, they helped with corn farming and gathered eucalyptus logs for a local woman who’d been living alone for some time and struggled to manage such tasks on her own. The wood collected would be used for cooking, cleaning, and heating her home for weeks to come. Her tears of gratitude were a powerful reminder of the group’s mission: to make a tangible difference not only for people in Peru, but also for families in Exeter, Central, and East Devon.

After completing the volunteering project, the group enjoyed a final meal together before the farewell celebrations began. On the way back to Cusco, they stopped at a nearby village for refreshments and an opportunity to explore some Inca ruins.

Day 5: The trek begins!

The adventure officially began with an ascent to Soraypampa, where the campsite was set against the stunning backdrop of the snow-capped Salcantay Mountain. The group faced a steep climb to the magnificent Humantay Lake, which tested their stamina but rewarded them with moments of reflection, connection, and awe at the stunning surroundings.

Day 6: Reaching new heights

Another day, another delicious breakfast provided by the chefs and porters. Today the landscape changed drastically from dry and arid, before descending into the tropical zone. The mountain switchbacks led the group up to the trek’s highest point, Abra Salkantay (4,630m). From snowy peaks to lush cloud forests, the changing landscapes were as memorable as the camaraderie among the trekkers.

Day 7: Into the rainforest

The trek continued through the Santa Teresa River Valley, where the group passed waterfalls, coffee plantations, and bamboo groves. At the campsite, a coffee masterclass gave everyone a taste of local life before a well-deserved dinner.

Day 8: First glimpse of Machu Picchu

A morning hike to Llactapata rewarded the group with their first unforgettable view of Machu Picchu. Walking through bamboo forests and jungle canopies, they ended the day with a scenic train ride to Aguas Calientes (which translates to hot water, a nod to the town’s thermal baths), celebrating their progress with a round of Pisco Sours!

Day 9: Machu Picchu – A dream realised

The group’s visit to the ancient citadel of Machu Picchu was a deeply emotional and inspiring moment. Guided by Ever and Rudy, the trekkers explored the city’s mystical beauty while reflecting on their personal motivations for joining the journey. Even an unexpected train breakdown couldn’t dampen the group’s spirits, as they shared stories and memories of the day.

Day 10: Farewell to Peru

The final day offered a moment of relaxation with a sunny lunch overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Trekkers shared their favourite moments, laughed over shared challenges, and reflected on the lasting impact of their efforts for Hospiscare.

Why it matters

This trek wasn’t just about adventure—it was about making a difference. Every step taken and every challenge overcome helped raise vital funds for Hospiscare, supporting individuals and families facing terminal illnesses.

This journey may have ended, but its impact will last a lifetime—for both the trekkers, Hospiscare’s patients and their families.
