Do you want to meet new people, learn new skills and put your talents to good use? Volunteering in our shops and in our Hospiscare warehouse could be just the opportunity you’re looking for…
Volunteering is a vital part of Hospiscare and helps to keep a wide range of our services and activities running. We are currently recruiting volunteers to join our shop and warehouse teams across Exeter, Mid and East Devon.
What does the role involve?
Our shop volunteers have an extremely varied role which includes front of house activities, such as serving customers, supporting managers with window displays and promoting and selling Hospiscare’s Lottery. The role also involves back of house activities, such as sorting donations, preparing clothes for sale and pricing and replenishing stock. We also have a variety of volunteer roles available at our warehouse in Marsh Barton:
- Warehouse sorting assistants
- Logistics administrators
- Admin supporters
- PAT testers
- eBay volunteers
- White goods volunteers
- House clearance volunteers
What skills or abilities do I need?
We’re looking for friendly and reliable people who can work well as part of a team and take direction from managers. For our shop roles, we are also looking for volunteers who will interact well with our customers.
Will I need to undergo training?
All of our volunteers receive an induction and we’ll make sure you have all of the training you need, including ‘Volunteering Essentials’ core training and Gift Aid training.
What will Hospiscare offer me?
There are many benefits to volunteering for Hospiscare. Volunteering in your local shop or at the Hospiscare warehouse is a great way to get to know people in your community and make a difference to end-of-life care where you live.
We’ll reimburse you for all of your travel and out of pocket expenses and a 25% discount is available on certain shop purchases on your volunteering days.
Di has volunteered at Honiton’s Dowell Street shop for four years and explains the highlights and challenges of her role: “Customers often have amazing and interesting stories about their lives, so I confess, I do engage them in conversation whenever possible! One gentleman comes to replenish his ‘library’ as he lost 65% of his books in hurricane Katrina! You never know who is on the other side of the counter.
“You may feel disheartened when sorting donations if you empty out a bag of dirty clothes or open a box of dirty china. Keep good heart as that same box of china, when washed, may turn out to be a collector’s item and raise lots of money on eBay. You never know what will come in!
“I think the main qualification you need to be a Hospiscare volunteer is a keen interest to be part of a valued charity.”
