A record-breaking year for Hospiscare Open Gardens

Thanks to our supporters, we're celebrating a record-breaking year for Hospiscare Open Gardens 2023

Throughout the summer, 40 gardeners took part in our annual Hospiscare Open Gardens campaign; opening their gates and welcoming members of the community to explore their beautiful green spaces in return for a donation.

We loved seeing our supporters’ beautiful gardens and this year we were lucky to welcome many new additions, including beautiful estates, community gardens, charming cottage gardens, and even a honey farm!

We’re thrilled to share that thanks to the support of our community, this has been a record-breaking year – raising £51,716.44 and counting to support specialist end-of-life care across the heart of Devon. We are so thankful to everyone who participated and welcomed people into their gardens to raise vital funds for our local charity – we couldn’t provide our services without your ongoing support.

Laura Robertson, Fundraising Projects Manager at Hospiscare, explains “This is the 15th year we have run the Hospiscare Open Gardens programme with this year being one of our biggest yet, raising a record-breaking amount for our local charity. We’re so grateful for the incredible amount of support we receive year after year from our community across Devon, and of course our ongoing event sponsor, Otter Garden Centres – we couldn’t do it without everyone involved!”

Jean Browning opened her garden in Trusham and says, “I opened my garden in June, along with my next-door neighbours Peter and Helen. We had a busy but fun weekend welcoming people to Rosedale and Glenview – the weather was perfect. The most important thing we managed to do was raise much needed funds for Hospiscare, and the help and support we received from Sharon (Hospiscare Area Fundraiser for Mid Devon) and her team was amazing!”

Maureen Basterfield opened her garden in Colyton this year and says, “We met with many lovely people who made it a pleasure to open Blackbury Honey Farm for Hospiscare. Our visitors are so keen to support a local charity that so many of them have had personal experience of.”

Jacqui Taylor, Managing Director at Otter Garden Centres says, “We were delighted to support Hospiscare once again this year and loved seeing all the beautiful Open Gardens. This is a very special charity for us, which is why we also chose Hospiscare again as our charity of the year at our Ottery St Mary Garden Centre. The team are proud to support the outstanding work of their nurses in our East Devon community as well as across Exeter and Mid Devon.”
