Hospiscare Heroes: From Hiking the Pyrenees to Conquering Tough Mudder

Our Hospiscare Heroes are nothing short of extraordinary.

Week after week, they dedicate their time and energy to fundraising for our local charity, supporting patients and families across Exeter, Central, and East Devon.

Every pound they raise makes a vital difference, and we cannot thank them enough for their incredible efforts. Here’s a look at how these heroes have been flexing their superpowers recently.

Our first story takes us to the rugged terrains of Spain, where Hospiscare Heroes Pip and Elsa embarked on the GR11 trail, one of Europe’s most challenging hiking routes. On June 30, they set out to traverse this demanding path, which stretches across the Pyrenees, separating the arid plains of Northern Spain from the lush hillsides of Southern France.

While Elsa had to return home partway, 66-year-old semi-retired Devon GP, Pip, continued the journey solo, carrying all her gear—a hefty 17kg load. After an astonishing 51 days of trekking, Pip reached the lighthouse at Cap de Creus, completing this epic adventure. Her determination and perseverance paid off, as she raised an incredible £2,288 for Hospiscare. If you’d like to learn more about Pip’s remarkable journey, check out her story on, check out her story on Polarsteps.

Back in the UK, our next stop is the Southwest edition of Tough Mudder, a gruelling challenge designed to push participants to their limits.

A massive thank you goes to the team at Swanky Agency, who tackled the mud, and all the obstacles on 10 August. The team raised an impressive £504 for Hospiscare. Your strength and stamina are truly inspiring!

group of golfers

Still in Devon, our next group of Hospiscare Heroes comes from in Exmouth and Exeter. They took on the Golfathon, the ultimate test of golfing endurance.

Everys’s female team, all beginners, impressively completed 36 holes in 9.5 hours, while the men’s team hit an incredible 72! Despite the differences in their game, both teams found common ground in their fundraising efforts, collectively raising £997.50. Well done to all involved!

Finally, we head to Feniton, where Adam Carnall has once again put his green fingers to work for Hospiscare. Known for his success at the Feniton and Sidford Flower shows, Adam has been busy selling plants grown from seeds, raising an incredible £200. Thank you, Adam, for your ongoing support and dedication!

Thank you to all our Hospiscare Heroes on behalf of our staff, patients, and their loved ones.
