Our Hospiscare Heroes are truly super; week after week, they support our local charity with their fundraising endeavours across Exeter, Mid and East Devon, ensuring we can be there for our patients and their families when they need us most.
From all of us at Hospiscare, we are sending a huge thank you to all of our Hospiscare Heroes. Read on to find out how they have been flexing their superpowers this week.
We’re sending our thanks to Hospiscare Hero Mark, who didn’t let the rain, wind and fog stop him as he embarked on the Devon Diamond Challenge over the Coronation weekend.
Along with his two cousins, Mark celebrated his birthday by cycling 250 miles to the four compass point villages of Devon. It was a tough ride, involving 20,000ft of climbing but Mark rose to the challenge and has so far raised an incredible £1,810 to help support our patients and their families. Thank you, Mark – that’s what we call pedal power!

We also want to thank Charlotte Hawke of Charlotte Strong Beauty, who took to the skies for her challenge on the wings of a vintage Boeing Stearman biplane. She was a true Hospiscare Hero and even volunteered to be the first to complete the wing walk on the day!
Charlotte has raised over £600 for Hospiscare in memory of her Aunty Chris, and we couldn’t be more grateful – thank you, Charlotte!
A big thank you to Nicki Perry of LED Leisure Honiton who celebrated her 10th anniversary as a spin instructor by taking on a special challenge in aid of Hospiscare – running ten Spin sessions back-to-back, from 8.20am to 3pm… In true Hospiscare Hero style, Nicki absolutely smashed her spinathon and raised over £1,000!
Thanks to Nicki and all the wonderful participants, some of whom even completed all 10 sessions!
We also want to thank the staff and children of Littletown Primary Academy for taking part in the mini marathon Guinness World Record attempt. The children raised a steptacular £130 to help support local patients and their families and enjoyed a visit from Rachel and Kate from #TeamHospiscare, who went along to share some top tips for determination and perseverance, and to show their London Marathon 2023 medals!
After completing the London Marathon, Rachel and Kate are continuing their fundraising journey…
The pair were inspired by Rachel’s mum, Helen, to take on numerous events throughout 2023 including the Sir Walter Raleigh Half marathon, the Jurassic Coast and Dartmoor Ultra Marathons, and of course the iconic London Marathon 2023.
Rachel explained: “Helen battled cancer with grit and determination for many years. Defying everything it threw her way she never gave in or gave up. After 6 years of fighting terminal cancer, on 8 October 2022 it was time to lay that battle to rest. The support the Hospiscare team gave my mum was invaluable to her and our family… I am hoping to raise funds to continue this vital service so that they can continue to give families the support they need in their most difficult time.”
On Sunday 14 May, the duo successfully completed their latest epic challenge: The Exmoor in a Day Marathon. Huge congratulations and thanks to Rachel and Kate for going the distance for Hospiscare!
